What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a restoration used replace lost tooth structures following dental damage or decay. These restoration options take their name from the fact that they literally sit on top of a damaged tooth. A dental crown is crafted to fit over the top of your tooth, replacing structure and protecting the healthy tooth from additional damage or decay. Crowns can be crafted from a number of materials, but we typically recommend tooth-colored restorations to ensure a flawless end result.
What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a tooth replacement prosthetic that can be used to replace one or a few consecutive teeth. The replacement tooth is fused to two dental crowns on either side. The crowns are molded to attach to teeth on both sides of the vacated socket. Then, the entire prosthetic is cemented into place, leaving patients with a flawless smile.
Am I a Candidate for a Dental Crown or Bridge?
If you have a decayed, broken, or missing tooth, a dental crown or bridge may be a great option. Dr. Rana Lee will typically recommend dental crowns and bridges in the following situations:
Repair – we can correct damage to a tooth due to decay or trauma or replace a damaged or lost dental crown or other restoration by fitting a dental crown over the top of a tooth. In the case of severe decay or damage, we may recommend removal of the damaged tooth and replacement with a fixed bridge restoration instead.
Protection – following advanced root canal therapy, we may recommend placing a dental crown to strengthen the treated tooth, preventing further oral health concerns.
Aesthetics – to improve the appearance of a damage, discolored, or malformed tooth, we may place a tooth-colored dental crown to create a seamless smile line.
