What happens during a dental cleaning?

Even the most diligent daily brushing and flossing on your own can’t address all plaque in your mouth every day. Over time, it builds up and hardens into tartar, at which point it becomes much more challenging to get rid of with the tools you have available. Luckily, our experienced hygienists have the training and the tools needed to remove plaque and tartar buildup, especially in hard-to-reach areas like in between teeth. They will also demonstrate the proper way to floss, and then they will polish each of your teeth, removing surfaces stains in the process.

Why is a regular dental cleaning important?

A dental cleaning does more than just give you a slick, fresh feeling and polished pearly whites. It prevents serious oral problems before they have a chance to develop in the first place. For example, the bacteria in plaque create toxic acids that irritate your gums and attack your teeth. With time, these bacteria can cause tooth decay or gum disease. Getting a professional dental cleaning with us every six months essentially wipes the slate clean and keeps your mouth in tip-top health.

What happens during a comprehensive oral exam?

After your cleaning, Dr. Lee will conduct a comprehensive oral exam. This entails both a visual and tactile inspection of your orofacial tissues and structures. In the process, she checks your individual teeth, your gums, your tongue, and the soft and hard tissues in your mouth. She may use gauze to hold or move your tongue so that she can get a better view of the back of your mouth. In addition, she gently feels your jaw and neck for any suspicious lumps or bumps. In this whole exam, she is looking for any signs of oral conditions, such as tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer, TMJ issues, and so much more.

Oral problems can develop quickly. That’s why Dr. Lee performs a comprehensive oral exam at every checkup, knowing that it is easier to catch and treat a problem during the early stages than it is down the road. If you skip your routine dental checkup, you run the risk of experiencing unnecessary pain and needing more extensive treatment later on. And in some cases, such as gum disease or oral cancer, oral problems can cause permanent damage and have serious consequences to your health if treatment is postponed until after you notice the problem on your own. At your dental checkup and cleaning appointment, you can have peace of mind knowing that Dr. Lee will identify the early signs of these conditions, formulate a personalized treatment plan, and help you maintain your oral health in the long term.

At TriCorner Dentistry, our caring team of dental experts are dedicated to making you comfortable even during routine appointments. We can’t wait to get to know you and your family and help you keep your smile happy and healthy for years to come.
